Wolseley Titan Rotovator Cultivator 2 sp+rev Briggs 5hp

Another bargain from my late dad's shed. A Wolseley Titan GT Rotovator / Cultivator.
Powered by a Briggs & Stratton 5 HP (unleaded) Petrol engine. This unit has two forward speeds, neutral, and reverse, operated by a gear lever and a clutch and throttle control on the handle bar. The handle bar is angle adjustable. Also it has a twin drive pulley with different size pulleys, so effectively it has four forward and two reverse speeds (but you would have to change belts to achieve the higher ratios). The transport wheels are easily removable as one unit and it has an adjustable rear tine. Don't confuse this machine with the cheaper chain driven machine, the rotors are driven by gears in the casing are consequently much more reliable and long living (see bottom picture). Originally the Wolseley top of the range machine. These machines will go on for years and are built like the proverbial tank. They don't make them this strong any more.

An oldie but goodie, obviously some years old but eminently useable, it has stood for some time unused. The engine has been de-coked recently and a new throttle cable and new spark plug fitted. The engine starts well (for a Briggs) & pulls very well.

<<<<<   See pictures, taken just after being pressure washed the other day, plus a picture of it being tested on Saturday last. (The machine and operator were last seen rotovating in a southerly direction somewhere in Solihull East the operator shouting " Where's the ****ing brake on this thing!") You are welcome to view and try the machine, by appointment, in Birmingham, near to junction 5 on M6.
<<<<<

Originally this machine was part of our tool shop hire fleet, one of three. Some years ago we changed over to all Honda machines to standardise our parts stock. We sold the Wolseley machines and my late father, who by then had retired, kept the best one for his own very large garden. He replaced the engine, so this engine has done very little work, he only used it a few times a year for his vegetable garden. He repainted it, not very well, at some time.

This unit is very heavy and an awkward shape, so I am not offering to post it. So I would prefer you arrange collection. As a last resort however, I have a van and would consider delivery at an appropriate negotiated cost. I will include a scan of the Wolseley spare parts manual & the Briggs & Stratton engine operating manual plus some spare drive belts (if I can find them).

This item is offered for sale elsewhere so I reserve the right to withdraw it from auction at my discretion.

I pride myself on accurate descriptions, however if you have any questions please contact me. I'll be happy to answer as soon as possible.

Wolseley Titan Rotovator Cultivator 2 sp+rev Briggs 5hp

I have an unblemished eBay reputation and want to keep it that way. Please feel free to check my feedback, "ME" page or even contact people I have dealt with. All I ask you to do is read the notes below and my terms. If  you do not agree, please do not bid.

Bidders please note:

  • If you want further details or clarification of anything, email me and I will reply as soon as I can. If you want, where possible, I will email you further photos.

  • No warranty is given or implied, unless expressly agreed in writing.

  • I try to describe my goods as accurately as possible so that you will not be disappointed. So please read all the description and any later additions. But remember some parts of descriptions rely on memory and sometimes memories can be wrong. It is up to you to establish if the item is exactly what you want.

  • If I am wrong in my description, please tell me. I will post an addition and email all bidders your comments.

  • Unless otherwise stated the goods belong to me. I am NOT a dealer or collector. I just rarely throw stuff away.  I am an IT engineer and also part own a tool hire shop.

  • I will sell outside the UK, but please be aware that overseas carriage can be expensive. Also I expect you to pay the cost of currency exchange and credit card charges.

  • Like other sellers I have suffered with the odd non-paying bidder. They cause everyone wasted time and effort. I may contact bidders to verify bids. If bids or the bidder cannot be verified I reserve the right to reject bids at my discretion.

Winning bidders please note: Terms of Auction

  • Please contact me as soon as possible to arrange shipping and payment.

  • If you are going to be without email facilities for a while for any reason, tell me. I'm an understanding chap.

  • If you do not contact me within 7 days from the close of the auction I will re-list the item & post a non-paying bidder alert.

  • If payment is not received within a mutually agreed time, I will re-list the item & post a non-paying bidder alert.

  • I do not accept responsibility for goods lost or damaged in transit, but you can pay extra for insured carriage if you wish.

  • You can mail me cash (notes or bills only) in your own currency, a cheque in UK Pounds Sterling or pay by credit/charge card to Paypal

  • Goods will not be dispatched until receipt of payment or cleared funds.

Postage:

  • As I don't know yet where I am sending the item to, I don't know how much packing to use. International shipping needs extra care. Some people collect stuff, so weighing it beforehand is a waste of time. Sometimes I have quoted for post with minimum packing and subsequently been asked to box the item, I have therefore sometimes lost on the postage.

  • I do not charge for packaging materials and will charge you the ACTUAL postage cost.

  • I will be happy to check on the postage cost for you, just ask.

  • You can checkout the Royal Mail website and tell me which service you want me to use.

Your questions answered

Thank you for your questions. I will reply to them here so everyone can see the answers.

Are the belts easy to get?
Very easy, most cities have a "Bearing Services" or "BSL" and belts of all sizes are usually in stock.

Is the engine two-stroke?
No. It is standard four stroke. You do not have to add oil to the petrol. You use ordinary unleaded petrol.

You say "The engine starts well (for a Briggs)" What do you mean?
Briggs & Stratton engines are notorious for being poor starters. Ask anyone in the trade. once they are going they are great. The easy way around this is to remove the plug, drop a small amount of petrol down the plug hole, replace the plug and it will invariably start. This one sometimes starts on 3rd or 4th pull, sometimes it won't and instead of pulling your guts out you are best helping it along as I have just described.

Does the gearbox leak?
Now you are getting technical. A perennial problem with a Rotovator. No it does not leak. But here is a secret to running these machines. We always use a mixture of1/3 gear oil and 2/3 chain oil.

Did the operator on Saturday stop the machine?
That was a joke. The machine does not have or need a brake. The clutch is a "dead man" device. When you release it the drive to the rotors is stopped.
